Moroccan Desert Adventure: From Marrakech to the Heart of the Sahara
Tour Overview
Conducting initial research on flights from your nearest airport can help you find the most cost-effective options for arriving in and departing from Morocco. Our tours are highly flexible and can start from any city that fits your schedule.
Day 1: Arrival in Marrakech and Hotel Transfer
Upon your arrival at Marrakech airport, you’ll be greeted and transferred to your hotel in the city center. After settling in, feel free to explore the vibrant Djemaa el Fna, the bustling square at the heart of the medina, which comes alive with street performers, food stalls, and entertainers in the evening.
Day 2: Marrakech to Dades Valley
Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Ait Benhaddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura Oasis → Roses Valley → Dades Valley
After breakfast, your guide will pick you up from your hotel and we’ll leave Marrakech behind, crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. This mountain pass, North Africa's highest at 2,260 meters (7,415 feet), offers stunning views as we pass through traditional villages where corn ripens on the roofs of stone houses.
Continuing through the land of the Glaoua tribe, we’ll encounter ancient kasbahs and granaries before arriving at Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’ll have time for lunch and to explore the famous kasbah at your leisure.
Our journey continues through the Skoura Oasis, surrounded by lush palm groves and dotted with kasbahs, ksours, and farmland. As we drive through the Roses Valley and onto the famed "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs," we’ll admire the historic fortresses and traditional Berber adobe homes that line the roads. Tonight, we will spend the night in Dades Valley.
Day 3: Exploring the Dades and Roses Valleys
Dades Valley, Bouteghrar, Roses Valley
After breakfast, we’ll embark on a full-day exploration of the Dades and Roses Valleys. We’ll pass terraced fields and enjoy the lush greenery of the M'Goun Valley, before climbing to a pass that leads us through juniper forests into a valley filled with adobe kasbahs.
Next, we’ll head into the heart of the Roses Valley, where you’ll see the famous rose fields, mixed with cereal crops, from which rose-based products are made. Along the way, we’ll visit local villages and see the rose oil distillation process.
At the end of the day, we’ll return to Dades Valley to relax and reflect on the day’s incredible experiences.
Day 4: Todgha Gorges Adventure
After breakfast, we’ll drive to Tinghir, a former military outpost on the banks of the Oued Todra River, surrounded by olive, pomegranate, and orange trees. The road takes us through one of Morocco’s most stunning oases, with palm trees lining the river.
We’ll then head into the narrow, dramatic section of the Todgha Gorges, where towering rock walls create a breathtaking natural corridor. You’ll have time to wander and take in the awe-inspiring views.
Day 5: From Rock Walls to the Golden Sand Dunes
After breakfast, you’ll have some free time before we head towards Erfoud, passing through the palm groves of Tinjdad and Touroug. We’ll stop at a workshop where you can see the production of local fossils.
We’ll then continue to Merzouga, a desert village located on the edge of the majestic Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Upon arrival at the kasbah, you can freshen up and leave any extra luggage behind. You’ll then embark on a 4WD ride to meet your camels for a trek into the dunes.
Whether you choose a brief 10-minute ride or a longer 2-hour trek, both options include time to admire the sunset and take stunning photos. You’ll spend the night in a private tent at our luxurious desert camp, where you’ll enjoy a traditional dinner and music around the campfire.
Day 6: Off-Road Desert Adventure and Tea with Nomads
If you rise early, you can witness the spectacular sunrise over the dunes, where the colors and shadows play across the sand. After breakfast, we’ll set out for a 4WD tour around the desert, visiting the Merzouga Oasis, the nomadic depository, and Khamlia Village. Here, we’ll hear the soulful sounds of Gnawa music performed by descendants of former slaves who traveled to Morocco from Senegal via the Salt Route.
We’ll also meet local desert nomads and visit their tents, where you’ll learn about their way of life. Continuing to the nearby Lake of Merzouga, we’ll enjoy views of the diverse birdlife that inhabits the area.
Next, we’ll visit Rissani, once known as Sijilmassa, a key stop for the salt caravans traveling from Timbuktu. You’ll have time to explore the souk, where you can find spices, clothes, and fresh produce. After enjoying a pizza lunch in Rissani, we’ll head back to the kasbah, where you can relax and unwind before enjoying dinner and spending another night in the desert.
Day 7: Sunrise, Oases, Barbary Apes, and Fes
Merzouga → Erfoud → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Azrou → Ifrane → Fes
After breakfast, we’ll retrace our route to Erfoud and then continue to the stunning Ziz Valley, a dramatic gorge surrounding Morocco’s largest oasis, the Ziz Oasis. With its palm trees, abandoned kasbahs, and mud-brick villages, this area is a photographer’s dream.
We’ll stop for lunch in Midelt, a town nestled beneath the towering peaks of the High Atlas Mountains. From there, we’ll continue through diverse landscapes, ranging from rocky plains to cedar-covered mountains and deep canyons. In the hills near Azrou, we may even spot a group of Barbary Apes.
Our journey will then take us to Ifrane, often referred to as "the Switzerland of Morocco," before arriving in Fes, the cultural capital of Morocco. After helping you find your riad, your guide will bid you farewell, allowing you time to explore Fes at your own pace.
