Every rural area in Morocco has a weekly souk, and its name often tells you the day: Tnine (Monday), Tleta (Tuesday), Larbaa (Wednesday), Khemis (Thursday), Jemaa (Friday), Sebt (Saturday), Had (Sunday).
Market days near Marrakech
- Monday: Tnine Ourika, in the Ourika Valley, one of the biggest. Also Tnine Hem.
- Tuesday: Amizmiz and Tahanaout.
- Wednesday: Ijoukak, on the Tizi n’Test road.
- Thursday: Khemis Ouirgane.
- Friday: Aghmat.
- Saturday: Asni, on the way to Imlil.
- Sunday: Sidi Ghiat.
Days can change around holidays and Ramadan, so we always confirm before the trip.
Two views
For: these are working markets where people from the villages buy vegetables, tools, animals and spices, get a haircut and meet friends. It is the most authentic shopping experience near Marrakech.
Against: they are crowded, dusty and sometimes muddy, with a livestock area that not everyone enjoys, and there are few souvenirs to buy. If you want crafts, the Marrakech medina is better.
Tips
- Go early: the busiest time is mid-morning.
- Ask before photographing people.
- Bring small change for tea or fruit.
