All three valleys are about 1 to 1.5 hours from Marrakech, all have Berber villages and walking paths, and all can be combined with lunch in a local home. But they feel very different.
Imlil: the big mountains
Imlil sits at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak, in Toubkal National Park. The walks are the most dramatic, with views of high peaks, terraced villages such as Aroumd, and walnut groves. It is also the most popular, and the paths are steeper. The area was affected by the September 2023 earthquake, and villages are rebuilding; visiting with local guides supports them.
Ourika: green and lively
The Ourika Valley follows a river lined with cafés, walnut trees and terraces. It is the easiest to reach and the busiest, especially at weekends around Setti Fatma and its waterfalls. With a local guide you can walk away from the road to quieter villages. On Mondays, the Tnine Ourika souk is a bonus.
Ouirgane: quiet and gentle
Ouirgane is a softer landscape of olive groves, juniper hills and red-earth villages along the Nfis river. The walks are easier and you will meet few other visitors. On Thursdays, the Khemis Ouirgane souk brings the valley together.
