Merzouga to Zagora via Ramlia and Ouzina: Desert Adventure or Just a Long Drive?

Between the dunes of Merzouga and the palm groves of Zagora there are two very different routes. The paved road runs west through Rissani, Alnif, Tazzarine and N’kob. The other route follows desert tracks south and west through Ramlia, Taouz and Ouzina, close to the edge of the hamada. Which is better depends on who you ask.

View 1: the desert route is the adventure of the trip

Those who love it describe a day that feels like crossing the Sahara rather than driving around it: the last small oasis villages around Ramlia, the rock engravings near Taouz, the small dunes near Ouzina, open plains with nobody in sight, and nomad tents far from any road. It turns a transfer into a highlight, and many travellers say it was the most memorable day of their trip.

View 2: it is a long, dusty day for most people

Others point out that this route is long and needs a well-equipped 4×4 and an experienced driver. Part of it is on rough tracks, there are few services, and in summer the heat is serious. If you have already slept in the dunes at Merzouga, the scenery can feel repetitive, and the paved road via N’kob, with its many kasbahs, offers more variety in less time.

Our honest advice

  • Choose the Ouzina route if you love wild places, travel outside the hottest months, and are happy to spend a full day in a 4×4.
  • Choose the paved road via Alnif and N’kob if you prefer comfort, kasbah villages and a shorter day.
  • Conditions change with rain and wind, so we always check the tracks before we leave.
