Tata lies in the far south of Morocco, between the Anti-Atlas mountains and the Sahara. The road that links it with Foum Zguid in the east and Akka and Bouizakarne in the west passes through some of the least visited oases in the country.
What there is to see
- Palm oases around Tata and Akka, with earthen ksour and gardens irrigated by old channels.
- Rock engravings: the area around Akka and Tata is rich in prehistoric engravings of animals that lived here when the Sahara was green.
- Mountain scenery: long ridges of the Anti-Atlas, dry riverbeds and wide plains.
- Foum Zguid, the town where the desert track from Erg Chigaga and Lake Iriqui comes out.
View 1: too remote
Critics say the distances are long, the services few, and the summer heat extreme. For a first trip to Morocco, they argue, time is better spent in Marrakech, the Atlas and Merzouga.
View 2: the best-kept secret
Others say that is exactly the point: no crowds, no touts, and a real sense of discovery. For travellers who have already seen the classic route, the Tata road shows a different Morocco.
Our advice
Travel between October and April. Combine Tata with Erg Chigaga (via Foum Zguid) or with the oases of Taghjijt and Amtoudi. Tata can be added to our 6-Day Marrakech to Agadir via Erg Chigaga route.
All our tours are private, with your own driver-guide and vehicle, and every route can be adapted to you. Send us your dates on WhatsApp or through the enquiry form.
